About this course
Course summary: Create protagonists, antagonists, and supporting casts who make thriller danger personal. Learn to build motives, secrets, voices, moral choices, and arcs, then deliver a revised character-driven thriller scene and professional character dossier.
Course overview: This independent-study writing course contains 10 modules with four lessons each. Designed for new and developing thriller writers, it needs no prior publication experience. Plan for 2–4 hours per lesson, with extra drafting time for the capstone. You will build a continuing project from first character premise to a revised thriller sample and critical reflection.
Learning outcomes: Identify thriller character roles and stakes; design goals and flaws; compare competing motivations; draft high-pressure scenes and distinct dialogue; research psychological portrayals responsibly; revise for clarity, fairness, suspense, and an earned character arc.
AI writing partner policy: Your story, judgment, and final language remain yours. You may ask AI to identify unclear motives, propose contrasting choices, or act as a skeptical first reader using only text you provide. Check suggestions yourself; do not give confidential material or use invented AI claims as research. All exercises can also be done with a human partner or a self-review checklist.
Completion standards: Complete the five sections and writing lab in each of the 40 lessons; retain the planning sheets, drafts, and revisions in a course portfolio; submit the Lesson 10.4 capstone package with an author note. Revise work against the self-checks before submission. The capstone is assessed with the 100-point rubric inside the last lesson.
