About this course

Course summary: Learn to write compelling and fair cliffhangers across fiction, television, audio, and interactive stories. Study narrative, emotional, and visual hooks; build suspense through character decisions and clues; adapt endings to genre and format; and draft, test, revise, and present an original cliffhanger story with a meaningful payoff.

Course overview: This practical course follows the ten chapters of the source manuscript. Each module contains four independent lessons. The sequence moves from what cliffhangers promise, through their forms and placement, into case studies, genre use, workshops, ethics, serialization, new media, and a complete original project. Examples in this course are original teaching illustrations unless a published work is specifically named for analysis.

How to study: Read each Core lesson and its demonstration before starting the Writing lab. Keep a folder containing scene drafts, ending alternatives, feedback records, a question/payoff ledger, and revised work. Complete the self-check without outside help first; then compare your answers with the guidance and revise any weak passage. Peer critique is useful but not required; solo testing is always possible.

Completion requirements: Complete all 40 lessons and their labs; submit the culminating story installment of 1,200–1,500 words, a 450–650-word next-scene payoff, a five-entry hook map, two reader responses or a documented solo prediction test, a 250-word revision memo, and a three-minute presentation script or recording. Revisions must address one identifiable weakness found in the initial draft.
