About this course

Course summary: Learn to create sustained suspense in fiction through emotional stakes, reader expectations, character vulnerability, strategic information, pacing, setting, dialogue, foreshadowing, and revision. Forty progressive lessons lead to a polished original suspense story and an evidence-based craft portfolio.

Course overview: This applied writing course converts the source chapters on suspense psychology, characters, structure, conflict, atmosphere, dialogue, narrative devices, published examples, and workshops into independently teachable lessons. All examples and student stories in this course are original unless a published work is explicitly named.

Intended students: Fiction writers of mysteries, thrillers, horror, domestic suspense, espionage, literary suspense, and other narratives that depend on anticipation. No prior course is required. Suggested workload: 3–5 hours per module, plus a final revision period.

Learning outcomes: Identify the difference between suspense, tension, and surprise; engineer meaningful story questions; align reader and character knowledge; build escalating stakes; manipulate rhythm and revelation; develop strong scene-level subtext; and revise a sustained suspense narrative.

Completion standards: Complete the writing lab and self-check in each lesson, retain the strongest artifacts for a portfolio, and submit the module-ten capstone. For exercises that refer to a partner, a self-review using the included criteria is equally acceptable.

AI Writing Partner policy: AI is optional. You may request alternative stakes, a reader-confusion audit, or feedback on a passage you wrote. Verify suggestions against the lessons and revise in your own voice. You, the author, choose the facts, craft, and final words. Do not enter private personal material without permission.
