About this course
Course summary: Learn to turn romantic attraction into a complete, cause-and-effect love story. Create active leads, meaningful conflict, turning points, intimate scenes, a satisfying ending, and a revised romance plot portfolio.
Course overview: This Writer’s University course teaches the structure and practical writing decisions behind plot-driven genre romance. Students develop one original romance idea from premise through a complete beat outline, selected polished scenes, and a reader-facing pitch. The focus is romantic plot construction rather than character profiles alone.
Intended students and prerequisites: Beginning and developing fiction writers; no prior publication or special software required. A word processor and a willingness to revise are enough. The principles also help writers of romantic subplots, but the main assignments use the ending promise of genre romance.
Suggested workload: Allow roughly 2–4 hours per lesson for reading, drafting, and revision. Save each assignment in one course portfolio. The word counts in Writing lab sections are working targets, not publication rules.
Course outcomes: By the end, students can identify the romance reader contract; plan two active leads; connect inner and outer conflict; map six major plot turns; draft scenes with causal turns; revise intimacy and dialogue for relationship change; evaluate the crisis and ending; and pitch a cohesive novel.
AI collaboration policy: The student is the author and chooses every plot turn, character action, and final sentence. When invited, an AI Writing Partner can ask diagnostic questions, compare structures, or flag missing setup. Do not submit private or copyrighted text without permission. Students may complete every task without AI.
Completion standard: Complete all 40 lessons, keep the evolving plot portfolio, and submit the Lesson 10.4 capstone. Revisions are part of the work; a polished project is judged against the 100-point rubric, not the number of AI suggestions accepted.
